5 FAQs Answered About Sealed Glass Unit Coatings for Windows

At Marlboro Windows and Doors, we get a lot of questions about our window coatings. We offer a full range of glass coatings, but sometimes people aren’t quite sure what we mean by that! Glass coatings can help reduce cooling and heating costs, so it’s important to us that our customers are well informed.

Here are 5 frequently asked questions answered, all about our window coatings!

1)   What are they?
Glass window coatings are a special coating that’s placed on the window to increase its energy efficiency. This type of coating was developed to minimize the level of ultraviolet (UV) and infrared light (IR) that can pass through glass, while still allowing the same amount of visible light to be transmitted through your window.

2)   How do they work?
In order to understand how window coatings work, we have to have a mini science lesson about the solar energy spectrum, so listen up! The solar energy spectrum is the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun. We know it sounds confusing, but basically, there are different types of light and they all do different things when they hit your windows. UV light, visible light, and IR light all occupy different parts of the solar spectrum. Glass coatings work to reflect infrared light, which causes buildings to heat up, away from your home in order to reduce cooling costs.

3)   What type of coatings are available at Marlboro?
At Marlboro, we offer two types of window coatings. Our soft coat low-emissivity windows are created by applying silver, zinc, or tin to the glass in a vacuum. Hard coat windows are created by pouring melted tin on top of a sheet of glass. Both options work well and will provide you with better, more energy efficient windows.

We also make our insulated glass units (two panes of glass in a hermetically sealed unit) in-house, from scratch. Our insulated glass units have a full range of features and options to improve energy efficiency, such as insulating dry airspace between its two panes, to prevent condensation. Airspaces can also be filled with argon gas and double sealed to enhance the windows insulating performance.

4)   Can you get window coatings after installation?
No. Window coatings can only be applied to the window during the manufacturing process.

5)   How much do glass coatings cost?
The price of our glass coatings depends on what kind of windows you are purchasing. We offer a wide selection of Hybrid, Aluminum and Vinyl windows and ENERGY STAR approved options are available.
